Core Values Redux: A 57-week meditation exercise

I am no stranger to writing about Core Values on this blog. Back during my 30 Days of Blogging Challenge, I wrote about how I went through James Clear’s list of Core Values, ultimately coming up with a list of five that were either very important in my life or that I wanted to increase in importance.

The three that were already important were Adventure, Knowledge, and Recognition, while the two I wanted to cultivate were Curiosity and Self-Respect.

However, these are only five out of the fifty-seven values on the list. While I deliberately chose to limit my scope to actually be able to focus, I recognized that there is value to meditating on some that may not be as closely related to my day-to-day goals.

One of my good friends has previously decided on a ‘Word of the Year’ instead of goals in January. It is a sort of mantra that disperses with the teeth of rigid SMART goals and instead welcomes occasional reflection that may subtly steer one’s decisions. In that spirit, I decided to work my way down the full Core Values list (alphabetically), taking one week to reflect daily on each one and writing down some of my thoughts. Then I’ll compile the days together and use this as a platform to publish some of my reflections.

At the proposed pace, it will take more than a year, though it is certainly likely that I might run into snags along the way. But rather than a full court press, this is an act of meditation and reflexion, so I will enjoy taking my time.
